Nocturnal Lagophthalmos
(Sleeping with eyes partially open)
You might not realize this but some of us sleep with our eyes open. It may be you or your partner or your children. Largely due to genetics but sometimes due to sleep apnea or trauma. We see this happen to people dear to us. Symptoms can include - Blurred Vision when waking up, red eyes, dry eyes throughout the day, burning eyes when using eye drops, contact lenses feeling drier than usual.
If this happens to you, here are a few ways to combat this issue.
If this happens to you, here are a few ways to combat this issue.
- Use a Gel Eye Drop at night. Remember this is a chronic issue so you will need to use the eye drops at least 2 weeks before you can notice the improvements.
- Use a humidifier in your room. California is getting drier and drier each year, and your room gets quite dry with either the A/C or heater on.
- Advanced - If you want even more protection - use Ointment based Lubricants before bed.
Systane Gel DropsThis combo works great for this condition. The viscous nighttime GEL drops works tremendously well for people that sleep with their eyes partially open. This will provide needed protection. Use nightly before bed!
Use the Systane Ultra eye drops throughout the day (even with contact lenses). Up to 5 times a day. |
This humidifier works great at keeping the room hydrated - preventing circulating dry air from further parching out the opened eyes.
There is a timer function on this device but it is best to use either a Smart Plug or tradition outlet timer to cycle the humidifier on and off throughout the night. On for 30 minute every 1.5 hours. |
Systane Nighttime OintmentFor further relief, use this ointment for extra protection. This lubricant is especially great if you have been told that your eyes are almost WIDE open while you are asleep.
Before bed, apply 1/4 inch strip of ointment to the pink part of your inner lower eye lid and blink it into the eye. This might be a bit messy on your pillow, so consider a towel over it to protect it from staining. |
